Limitations & MVP Scope

Current design boundaries, supported output formats, planned categories, and MVP scope constraints.

To ensure rock-solid stability, sub-100ms render speeds, and zero cold-start penalties on edge serverless infrastructure, the MVP version of the Open Graph Image Generator intentionally bounds certain capabilities.

Output Formats: PNG Only

  • Supported: PNG (Portable Network Graphics) raster output.
  • Why PNG? PNG is universally supported by 100% of social media crawlers, messaging applications (Slack, Discord, iMessage, WhatsApp), and search engines. It supports crisp vector text edges without lossy compression artifacts.
  • Planned: WebP and JPEG export options are planned for future versions once crawler compatibility matures.

Typography & Script Coverage

  • Supported Scripts: Latin, Latin Extended, Cyrillic, and Greek.
  • Unsupported in MVP:
    • CJK Glyphs: Chinese, Japanese, and Korean character sets are not bundled to prevent exceeding edge worker package limits.
    • Bidirectional / Complex Scripts: Arabic, Hebrew, and Indic scripts are currently unsupported.
    • Color Emojis: System color emojis (e.g. 🚀, 💡, 🔥) are not rendered. For brand icons, pass transparent PNG logos via logo=....

Categories: Static Enabled, Screenshot & AI Planned

The API contract includes category definitions that reflect our long-term roadmap:

CategoryStatusEndpointBehavior
staticEnabled/v1/images/{template}.pngFully operational deterministic templates rendered at edge.
screenshotPlanned/v1/images/screenshot.pngReturns HTTP 501 category_not_enabled.
aiPlanned/v1/images/ai.pngReturns HTTP 501 category_not_enabled.
dynamicPlannedUser-saved layoutsPlanned for authenticated accounts.

You can cast an anonymous interest vote for planned categories on the Pricing & Feedback page.

Request Constraints

  • Maximum URL Length: 2,048 characters (uri_too_long if exceeded).
  • Remote Asset File Size: 2 MB maximum (remote_asset_failed if exceeded).
  • Remote Asset Dimensions: 4,096 × 4,096 pixels maximum.
  • Remote Asset Fetch Timeout: 3,000 milliseconds.
  • Render Execution Deadline: 8,000 milliseconds.
